Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about booking your cruise vacation
Booking & Pricing
How far in advance should I book a cruise?
We recommend booking 6-12 months in advance for the best cabin selection and pricing. However, last-minute deals (within 90 days) can offer significant savings if you're flexible with dates and cabin types.
What's included in the cruise price?
Most cruise fares include accommodations, main dining room meals, select beverages, entertainment, and basic activities. Not typically included: specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, gratuities, shore excursions, spa services, and WiFi. Check your specific cruise line for details.
Do cruise prices include taxes and fees?
No, advertised prices typically don't include government taxes, port charges, and cruise line fees. These can add $100-$300+ per person and will be clearly shown before final payment.
Can I get a refund if I cancel?
Cancellation policies vary by cruise line and how far in advance you cancel. Most cruises have a final payment date (typically 75-90 days before sailing). Canceling before this usually results in minimal fees. After final payment, fees increase significantly. We always recommend travel insurance.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover). Most cruise lines require a credit card on file for onboard expenses.
Travel Documents
Do I need a passport to cruise?
For closed-loop cruises (round-trip from US ports), US citizens can use a government-issued photo ID and birth certificate. However, we strongly recommend a passport book for all cruises – it's required if you need to fly home from a port in case of emergency.
What if my passport expires soon?
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. Many countries won't let you enter if it expires sooner. Renew your passport if it's close to expiring.
Do children need passports?
Yes, children of all ages need their own passport for international travel. For closed-loop cruises, they need a birth certificate and photo ID if over 16.
Onboard Experience
What should I pack for a cruise?
Essentials: comfortable day clothes, swimwear, sunscreen, formal/semi-formal attire for elegant nights, comfortable walking shoes, any medications, and power strips (outlets are limited). Check your cruise line's dress code for specific requirements.
Is WiFi available on cruises?
Yes, but it's typically an additional cost ($10-30+ per day) and can be slower than land-based internet. Most cruise lines offer WiFi packages. Some luxury lines include it.
Can I bring alcohol onboard?
Policies vary by cruise line. Most allow one bottle of wine per adult at embarkation. Hard liquor and beer are typically not permitted. Any alcohol purchased in ports will be stored and returned on the last day.
What about dietary restrictions?
Cruise lines accommodate most dietary needs including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher, and allergies. Notify us at booking and remind your server onboard for best service.
How do I pay for things onboard?
Cruises use a cashless system. You'll link a credit card to your room key/card at check-in. All onboard purchases are charged to this card. Cash is only needed for ports and tips in some cases.
Shore Excursions & Ports
Should I book shore excursions through the cruise line?
Cruise line excursions offer peace of mind – the ship will wait if your tour runs late. Independent tours can be cheaper and more personalized, but the ship won't wait. We can help arrange both options.
How much time do I have in each port?
Port times vary from 6-12 hours typically. Your cruise itinerary will show exact arrival and departure times. Always be back at the ship at least 30 minutes before departure.
What happens if I miss the ship?
If you miss the ship, you're responsible for getting to the next port at your own expense. This is why cruise line excursions are popular – they guarantee the ship will wait. Travel insurance often covers this scenario.
Special Circumstances
Can I cruise while pregnant?
Most cruise lines don't allow women who will be 24+ weeks pregnant during the cruise. Requirements vary by cruise line, so check specific policies when booking.
Are cruises kid-friendly?
Absolutely! Most major cruise lines offer kids clubs, teen programs, family-friendly shows, and activities. Some cruises are more family-focused (Disney, Royal Caribbean, Carnival) while others cater to adults (Viking, Oceania).
Can I cruise solo?
Yes! Many cruise lines now offer single cabins or reduced single supplements. We can help find the best solo traveler options and connect you with solo traveler groups.
What if I get seasick?
Modern cruise ships have stabilizers that minimize motion. Book a midship cabin on a lower deck for the smoothest ride. Bring medication (Dramamine, Bonine) or try acupressure bands. Ship medical centers can also help.
