Ship Details

The Viking® Difference

Voted #1 for Rivers, Oceans & Expeditions
We are proud to be the first travel company voted #1 across all three categories simultaneously by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler two years in a row.

Technology & Comfort
Our expedition ships have a dynamic positioning mode that allows them to hover in place when anchoring is difficult, providing guests with more comfortable small craft embarkation for excursions. To further enhance guest comfort, our ships feature both fin stabilizers that reduce rolling while sailing and a U-tank stabilizer that reduces rolling by nearly 50% when the ships are stationary.

Sized for Discovery
Our expedition ships are optimally sized for expeditions: small enough to navigate remote areas, yet large enough to provide speed, superior handling, and stability in the roughest seas. This is the latest in our legacy of award-winning ships including our Viking Longships®, built for Europe’s great rivers, and ocean ships, designed to dock in ports where larger ships cannot.

Designed for Views
With more indoor and outdoor viewing areas than other expedition vessels, guests are as close as possible to the most magnificent scenery on earth. Public rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, and the Aula, our panoramic auditorium, offers 270° views. Staterooms are also designed to maximize observation, from our Nordic Balcony Staterooms to Explorer Suites with verandas and gardens.

Expedition Equipment

The Hangar
An industry first, this enclosed in-ship marina permits the launch of small excursion craft through the ship’s slipway. Guests can embark on Special Operations Boats shielded from wind and waves from a flat, stable surface inside the ship and glide into the water to depart on their excursion. They re-enter The Hangar after excursions via the slipway to the protected marina before disembarking their Special Operations Boats.

Special Operations Boats
Our two military grade, 12-seater ice strengthened aluminum, ocean-going Special Operations Boats are built for exploration. With twin water jet propulsion (2 x 450 horsepower onboard engines), individually suspended seats and the unique ability to convert the open seating into an enclosed cabin.

Zodiacs
Designed for professional use in the harshest of environments, our fleet of seventeen Zodiacs with fuel-efficient Yanmar Dtorque 111 engines are reinforced throughout yet stable and comfortable for a day of exploration.

Kayaks
Our nine traditional tandem paddle kayaks offer superb stability and a large, open cockpit for easy accessibility. Built of durable rotomolded polyethylene, these kayaks are equally at home on the Great Lakes and in the Arctic or Antarctica.

Submarines
Our uniquely designed submarines comfortably accommodate 6 guests and a pilot for an incomparable undersea experience. The revolving seats plus nearly 270° spherical windows offer an undistorted view in all directions for every guest.

Viking Expedition Kit
The Viking Expedition Kit provides all gear that might be needed for relevant excursions; plus, for polar itineraries, a keepsake Viking Expedition Jacket.

For the Thinking Person

Before You Go
Before travel, we provide materials to help guests get the most out of their journey, from destination-specific photography advice by professionals to filmographies that inspire wanderlust and recommended reading that enlightens.

On Board
Our enrichment program is designed for the thinking traveler. On board, activities include daily briefings and world-class lectures. Guests can also engage with working scientists in our Science Lab or participate in citizen science programs. On shore, guests can assist in fieldwork or interact through experiential activities, such as helping identify migratory patterns, or accompanying scientists to collect samples.

On Shore
Our shore landings invite guests to engage on a deeper level by assisting in fieldwork or interacting in experiential activities. They might track birds to help identify migratory patterns, walk within view of captivating wildlife, or take a camera or field microscope ashore alongside the expedition leader to capture landscapes untouched by human hands.

Sail in Scandinavian Style

The Nordic Spa
Experience the ultimate healthy Scandinavian traditions from the Sauna and Snow Grotto to a relaxing massage.

Badestamp
Following Nordic tradition, our onboard badestamp, a traditional wooden-sided hot tub, is perfect for relaxing after a day of exploration. Try the longstanding Scandinavian practice of alternating between hot and cold when bathing to relax and rejuvenate.

The Living Room
Located to maximize views through the floor-to-ceiling windows, with a library that informs even the best-read explorers. The ideal setting for relaxation and conversation.

Explorers’ Lounge
Inspired by the trade routes of Vikings, the Explorers’ Lounge is the ideal place for guests to share their discoveries over an aquavit or a craft beer while sampling fine Scandinavian fare. Located high on the ship with floor-to-ceiling windows, the Explorers’ Lounge provides guests an ideal space to take in the magnificent scenery, share discoveries with fellow travelers or to enjoy a drink.

The Pools
A sanctuary of three different temperature pools (caldarium, tepidarium, frigidarium), including an “inside-outside” pass-through swimming experience from which guests can admire the surrounding scenery of vast wilderness—from polar ice fields to coniferous forests.

Aquavit Terrace®

Feel free to browse and borrow any of the selections; we only ask that you please return them at the end of your cruise.

Finse Terrace
An outdoor lounge area just above sea level with recessed, heated couches and lava rock “firepits,” the Finse Terrace was designed to allow our guests the comforts of the ship al fresco while enjoying the dramatic scenery. Named after the Finse Plateau in Norway, where some of the greatest polar explorers, including Nansen and Amundsen, did their expedition training in preparation for their North and South Pole expeditions.

The Aula
A stunning panoramic auditorium inspired by the University of Oslo’s famed ceremonial hall, the former venue for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Used for lectures, daily briefings, documentaries and films, this spectacular venue features a 4k laser-projected screen that retracts to expose floor-to-ceiling windows and 270° views.

Nordic Balconies & Suites

Nordic Balcony Staterooms
Our Nordic Balcony is the optimal wildlife observatory at sea. Floor-to-ceiling, distortion-free glass at the very edge of your ship lets you take in the views while keeping the elements out. Should you wish to feel even closer to nature, the top of your panoramic glass lowers to transform your stateroom into a sheltered al fresco lookout, with an observation shelf at elbow level to stabilize binocular viewing or photography. Each stateroom features our king-size Viking Explorer Bed with luxury linens, our floor-to-ceiling drying closet for your Viking Expedition Kit, and elegant bathroom with a spacious shower, heated floor and premium amenities.

Viking Suites
Nordic Junior Suites include our Nordic Balcony and more storage and seating than our Nordic Balcony staterooms, plus an expanded bathroom with extended shower and double sinks. All suites include welcome champagne, a fully stocked mini-bar, complimentary laundry, priority restaurant reservations and all the amenities of our regular Nordic Balcony staterooms.

Warm, Dry & Expedition Ready
Every stateroom and suite includes a floor-to-ceiling drying closet that circulates warm air to dry and store any relevant Viking excursion gear that might be needed, as well as your keepsake Viking Expedition Jacket (polar itineraries only), so suiting up is always pleasant and you will always be ready for the next discovery.

Virtually all activities are included in your fare in order to ensure you maximize your discoveries. About Viking Expeditions

In 2022, Viking launched expedition voyages with the arrival, the 378-guest Polar Class Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris. Both ships sail expedition voyages in Antarctica, the Arctic and North America’s Great Lakes.

Designed by the same experienced nautical architects and engineers that designed Viking’s Longships and ocean ships, the ships are optimally sized and built for expeditions, at an ideal size for safety, comfort and onboard amenities in remote destinations. An integrated bow creates a longer waterline for the ships; state-of-the-art fin stabilizers allow the ships to glide over the waves for the calmest possible journey; ice-strengthened Polar Class hulls provide the safest way to explore; and U-tank stabilizers significantly decrease rolling by up to 50 percent when the ships are stationary. The ships feature the company’s signature Scandinavian design, with public areas that are favorites on Viking’s ocean ships, as well as new spaces created specifically for expeditions.

Viking has also created the world’s leading scientific enrichment environment in an expedition setting. Exclusive partnerships with the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)—as well as other prestigious scientific institutions—match leading researchers and educators with each expedition.

Viking’s new expedition vessels have set a new standard for responsible travel, with an energy-efficient design that exceeds the current EEDI* requirements by nearly 38 percent—more than any other expedition ship. In addition to an integrated bow, engines with heat recovery systems and Azipod® Electric Propulsion, the Viking Octantis and the Viking Polaris have received one of the industry’s first SILENT-E notations—the highest-level certification for quiet ship propulsion, minimizing underwater noise pollution.

*Since January 1, 2013, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) was made mandatory for new ships, requiring a minimum energy efficiency level per capacity mile. This was the first legally binding climate change treaty to be adopted since the Kyoto Protocol.
